Simply stated, Affiliate Marketing is a referral-based sales strategy whereby online Merchants pay commissions to other Web sites (known as Affiliates) for referring business to the online Merchant's Web site.
Typically, merchants do not pay anything to their Affiliates until a sale occurs. They pay a commission to their affiliates only for actual sales made (or for some other agreed-upon action, such as completing a form).
This gives the referring Web site the ("affiliate") a financial incentive to refer customers to the merchants Web site, and they can afford to take more care with promoting this type of link than they would for a prepaid advertiser that is paying per "impression" (the number of times an ad is displayed).
