Stats and other cool stuff

Jakob Nielsen reports the average Web visitor will leave within one minute, 49 seconds of arrival if they do not find what they are looking for.

What a statistic! And think what it means to companies like Targetem -- we not only have to get visitors to your site, we have to make sure they find what they want, too.

To which we say "no problem."

First, some fast facts:

  • Most products and services purchased on the Web are the result of a search at a major search engine. The specific figures vary with the study, but we saw a really interesting one recently -- 85 percent of all internet shoppers start at a search engine.
  • Visitors referred by search engines are the most qualified visitors your Web site will ever get, because these visitors are specifically looking for the products or information found on your Web site.
  • Most Web sites get little or no traffic from the search engines because they are not listed at or near the top of the search results.

That last point was driven home in May 2004 in a study done by Survey Sample International for iProspect, (a giant in this field whose minimum client engagement is one year and $360,000).

The numbers: when it comes to abandoning a search, 23 percent give up if the answer isn't in the first few results, 44 percent will review the entire first page, and 17 percent will keep going after two pages. That means you'll lose 56 percent of the market after one page, and 83 percent after two pages.

Go look for your site in Google, then give us a call toll free at 1-877-216-3008. Yes we make our money by helping people find your site by way of a search engine, but we never forget that's only the first step. You have to give the people what they are looking for without making them dig.

Search engines don't buy products, people do. And a good Internet marketing consultant will be equally adept at optimizing for search engines as well as for people.

... a key term is the "oops." It stands for the Over-Optimization Penalty, and believe us, it can hurt you.
