Search Engine Submission: Simply outdated, or is it a scam?

Internet Marketing: Submission Services

We have long studied this aspect of web marketing, and, truthfully, it seems to be dominated in large part by companies wasting their customers money.

But we couldn't succeed in the internet marketing industry by blindly forming arbitrary opinions, and we have to report honestly that for certain situations, submissions to carefully selected directories can play a role.

On any given day, you can find an e-mail spam, a website, or some kind of service or software offer that will guarantee the submission of your site to hundreds or even thousands of search engines for a fee. We mean no disrespect to these people, but we have to honestly tell our clients:

  • It's usually a waste of money. And the people pitching it - they know this.
  • Almost half of all internet searches are done at Google.
  • Yahoo, MSN and ASK, together, have nearly all of what's left.
  • The top-three search engines get 95% of all search traffic.
  • AOL, HotBot, Netscape and many others use Google or Yahoo results.
  • Search engines want to find your site by following links from other sites.
  • The hundreds of other search engines for which you pay to be submitted to will get, combined, about 1%.

Here's one way of illustrating that point. Which of the following are Star Trek characters and which are search engines -- Ixquick, Fazzle, Kartoo, Vivisimo.

Trick question.

They are all search engines.

Remember that the next time you see a SEO page touting 1,000 No.1 placements.
